What Does T4T Mean?

T4T means trans for trans — trans people dating, hooking up with, or supporting other trans people. Here's where it came from and what it means today.

September 9, 2026

T4T stands for "trans for trans." It marks a trans person who is looking for, or prioritizing, other trans people — in dating, in sex, and often well beyond both.

Where it came from

The term started life as a personals category. On Craigslist, ads were labeled by who was looking for whom — m4w, w4w, and so on — and t4t was the trans equivalent. It was practical shorthand: a way to find each other without wading through people who were only interested in trans people as a novelty.

It outlived the personals section. Today t4t is as much a statement of solidarity as a dating preference — trans people choosing each other's company, looking out for each other, and building relationships where nobody has to explain themselves first.

What it means in practice

Depending on who's using it, t4t can mean:

  • A dating preference — this person dates other trans people, exclusively or by preference.
  • A boundary — a clear signal about who they're interested in hearing from.
  • Community and mutual aid — trans people supporting other trans people, financially and otherwise.
  • A politics — for some, a deliberate rejection of needing cis approval to feel legitimate.

T4T is not an orientation

It doesn't replace gay, straight, bisexual, pansexual or queer, and it isn't a gender. A t4t person still has whatever orientation they have — t4t describes a preference *within* that, for partners who are also trans.

Which means a t4t trans woman might be a lesbian, bisexual or straight. The label tells you who she's prioritizing, not who she's attracted to in general.

The flip side: what t4t is pushing back against

Trans people in dating and adult spaces deal constantly with people who are interested in them *as a category* rather than as a person — treated as a novelty, a bucket-list item, or something to be kept secret. There's a word for that pattern, and it isn't a compliment.

T4T is partly a response to it. It's a way of saying: I'd rather be with someone who doesn't need me to explain why I'm a person.

That's also why "trans friendly" and "t4t" mean very different things. The first usually describes a cis person signaling they're open to dating trans people. The second is a trans person choosing other trans people. Worth not mixing them up — including in our own classification, where "loves trans girls" never gets read as "is a trans girl."

Using it respectfully

  • If you're trans, use it however you like — it's yours.
  • If you're not trans, don't put t4t in your own profile. It isn't a way of saying you're an ally.
  • If someone's profile says t4t, believe it. It's a boundary, not an opening offer.

Finding t4t creators

Plenty of creators put t4t in their own bios, and where they have, we record it from their own wording rather than guessing.

Browse trans women, trans men and nonbinary creators — every label shown on a card comes from the creator's own profile. Anyone listed can correct their labels or be removed within 24 hours.
